Healthy Snacks to Take to the Beach

As every West Aussie knows, nothing beats a summer’s day spent at the beach. A healthy dose of sun, sand, surf and salt air make for the perfect day out – so once you’ve packed your bathers, thongs and a towel, there’s only one more thing to think of – the snacks you’ll bring along with you.

Before heading out the door, it’s important to think about the kind of snack foods that will keep well when the temperature rises – especially if you’re planning to stay at the beach for a few hours or so. Here are five easy (and healthy) snacks to bring along on your next day at the beach.

1. Fruit Skewers

Fruit is a staple when it comes to beach snacks – and luckily, if you’re a novice in the kitchen, fruit skewers are pretty difficult to get wrong. Simply stock up on plenty of fresh or frozen fruit, such as berries, grapes, watermelon, kiwi fruit, pineapple or oranges, and thread them on skewer sticks. Keep them as cold as possible so they’re a refreshing treat once you’re ready to eat them post-swim.

2. Veggies and dip

If you’d rather more savoury produce, chop up some carrots, cucumbers, capsicums or other vegetables to make handy dipping sticks. Pop them on a platter, and then pick your dip – hummus, babaganoush, tzatziki, French onion dip or crushed pesto are popular options. These dips can be store-bought, or if you have a food processor, they can be easily created by blending ingredients together – for a simple hummus recipe, combine olive oil, lemon, chickpeas and tahini. Easy as that!

3. Homemade granola bars

If you’ve got a bit of time up your sleeve, pop a batch of homemade granola bars into the oven. These can be made with dried fruit, nuts, oats and even a bit of chocolate – and the most efficient way to cook them is within a natural gas oven, as their precise temperatures remove the need to rotate your tray. Once they’re baked, wrap them up and bring them along – believe it or not, they’ll taste even better and gooier when they’re slightly warmed by the sun.

4. Trail mix and popcorn

To make the perfect trail mix, all you’ll need to do is throw your ingredients into a bag, shake it up, and pour out a handful once you’re hungry. These ingredients could include dried fruits such as cranberries, goji berries or dried mango, coconut flakes, or nuts such as almonds, walnuts, pecans or cashews. For something a little different, prepare some natural popcorn and mix it in with your trail mix for some extra texture.

5. Protein balls

Similar to the homemade granola bar recipe, making the perfect protein ball involves combining a few ingredients (such as oats, nut butter, almond flour and dried fruit) into a bowl, rolling them into balls, and then cooking them in the oven. A natural gas oven will work wonders when cooking protein balls, as you won’t need to watch and constantly turn them thanks to this type of oven’s precise temperature control.
